My daughter, Catherine, has played competitive soccer for many years, so being active is a very big part of her life. One day Catherine was in the front yard playing with her siblings when she injured her foot.
I took Catherine to our pediatrician and she ordered x-rays. Our pediatrician said they couldn’t see anything broken and sent her home with the diagnosis of a bad sprain. We treated it like a sprain and put a brace on her foot.
A week went by and the injury continued to get worse. Catherine’s foot became more swollen and bruised, and she had almost no mobility. Concerned, I took Catherine back to her pediatrician and asked them to refer us to Andrews Sports Medicine. We scheduled an appointment with Dr. Rachel Henderson, a non-surgical sports medicine physician.
During our initial appointment with Dr. Henderson, she scheduled an MRI for that day and a follow-up appointment with her 2 days later. It turned out that Catherine had a stress fracture on her medial sesamoid bone. Unfortunately, this kind of fracture is difficult to see on a traditional x-ray, which is why the first x-ray didn’t show it.
Dr. Henderson was very upfront about her expectations from us as a patient. She didn’t give us a “one-size fits all” treatment. As soon as the MRI confirmed the stress fracture, Dr. Henderson notified us that Catherine would most likely be in a cast for 10-12 weeks followed by 4-6 weeks in a boot.
Dr. Henderson knew the end-game we wanted for Catherine’s foot was sustained success and she did everything she could to help us get there. Over the next two months, we had follow-up appointments with Dr. Henderson every two weeks, so she could monitor Catherine’s progress and to make sure we were on track.
As a female engineer, it was really refreshing to have a strong female presence as Catherine’s doctor. Our entire experience with Dr. Henderson and her staff was great. They were all so awesome and encouraging. When Catherine and I left our last appointment with Dr. Henderson, there was a bit of sadness all around as we all had created a connection and we were all going to miss seeing each other on a bi-weekly basis.
I am very hopeful our family does not have any orthopaedic injuries in the future; however, if we do, we’ll definitely schedule an appointment Dr. Henderson.
