Here’s exactly what happens to your body after a muscle injury. And what you should do about it, too. You went really hard at kickboxing yesterday. Now you just find it really hard to move. That’s because your muscles have suffered tissue damage. “When you exert stress on the muscles, the fibers can break apart,” says Jay Umarvadia, M.D., a sports medicine physician at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Most of time, your muscles repair themselves and become stronger, with the soreness peaking after 24 to 48 hours, then starting to fade in a couple days.
