My name is Robin Stewart and I am from Hazel Green, Alabama. My son, Daniel, is very passionate about baseball and we are a huge baseball family. So, when Daniel was injured in February of 2018 during freshman year of his high school baseball season, he thought his world was ending.
Daniel, who plays catcher, was warming up for a junior varsity high school game. After making a warm-up throw to second base, he turned to me and said, “Mom, I heard it pop.” I was thinking there was no possible way.
We took Daniel to a local facility in Huntsville for a diagnosis. About that time, I was telling a friend about Daniel's injury and he commented that he'd previously had a surgery performed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham. He went onto explain how he had the best experience and strongly suggested we get a second opinion from Dr. Dugas.
Miraculously, Dr. Dugas' staff was able to work in Daniel for an appointment two days later. Dr. Dugas informed us that Daniel had completely snapped the epicondyle bone in his elbow, which was different from the original diagnosis we had received in Huntsville. Daniel was heartbroken that he would be missing the remainder of his junior varsity season.
Dr. Dugas explained the injury in great detail and suggested surgery. He thoroughly explained the risks and benefits of the surgery and we scheduled Daniel's surgery prior to leaving the clinic.
A few days later, Dr. Dugas performed Daniel's surgery, which included placing a pin in Daniel's right arm.
Dr. Dugas did a phenomenal job on Daniel's arm. Daniel had a great rehab and is back doing what he loves to do. Daniel is currently excelling injury free with his travel team. He is projected to be the starting catcher for his high school team this coming year, and he just made the 2019 Alabama High School Coaches Association Underclassman Team as the only incoming junior catcher.
Our family grew very close to Dr. Dugas and the staff at Andrews Sports Medicine. When you have a young athlete that is injured, you can't take them anywhere but Andrews. We were beyond pleased with how they treated us like family.
We are very grateful to Dr. Dugas for his exceptional work and will forever be thankful for providing Daniel the opportunity to continue living out his passion!
