Conditions + Treatments
At 13 years old, Sarah Ashlee Barker came close to losing her dream of becoming a WNBA player before it ever began.
As an eighth grader at Berry Middle School, Sarah Ashlee was diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans — a condition that disrupted blood flow beneath the cartilage in her left knee, causing pain and limiting mobility.
Following surgery by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas, she faced a recovery timeline of nearly a year. Just two months later, she learned the procedure had been unsuccessful, forcing her to undergo a second, far more invasive surgery lasting more than four hours.
Even then, there were no guarantees. There was a possibility she might never jump, cut, or move the same again.
But she refused to quit.
Through faith, perseverance, family support, and relentless determination, Sarah Ashlee fought her way back — helping lead Spain Park girls’ basketball to the 2018 and 2020 AHSAA 7A State Championships before building a legendary collegiate career.
Today, she is living out her childhood dream in the WNBA.
Her story is more than basketball. It’s resilience. It’s comeback. It’s Victory Over Injury®.
