Advanced Fellowship Training in Spine Surgery
Dr. Young completed advanced fellowship training in spine surgery at The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado. He received cutting-edge clinical, surgical, and research training in endoscopic and minimally invasive spine surgery, motion-preserving techniques, robotic spine surgery, spinal biomechanics, and patient outcomes research.
During his fellowship, Dr. Young trained alongside internationally recognized spine surgeons and received specialized mentorship from Dr. Michael Gallizzi, an innovator in endoscopic and robotic spine surgery, and Dr. Sonny Gill, a leader in complex cervical and motion-preserving spine surgery.
He also received specialized training in complex anterior and posterior cervical surgery, comprehensive approaches to lumbar fusion, including anterior, oblique, lateral, and posterior techniques, as well as minimally invasive spinal deformity correction.
Additionally, his fellowship provided experience in the evaluation and management of spinal athletic injuries and return-to-play recommendations, including medical coverage for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard teams.
Academic Excellence & Research
Dr. Young earned his medical degree from the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama before completing his orthopaedic surgery residency at USA Health, where he served as Chief Resident.
During residency, he developed a strong interest in spine surgery and was recognized as a Todd J. Albert Scholar for his work in spine research. He has contributed to numerous research articles, book chapters and podium presentations on athletic spine injuries and motion-preservation techniques.
Dr. Young is committed to advancing innovative approaches in endoscopic and motion-preserving spine surgery and has presented his research at leading national and international spine conferences.

A Trussville, Alabama, native, Dr. Young graduated from Hewitt-Trussville High School, where he was a three-sport athlete before continuing his academic and athletic career at Auburn University.
While at Auburn, Dr. Young graduated cum laude with a degree in Biomedical Sciences while lettering on the Tigers football team, including the 2013 SEC Championship team. He was also named a Rhodes Scholarship semifinalist and received the Brad Davis SEC Community Service Leader of the Year Award, recognizing his academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to serving others.

Dr. Young is proud to return home to Birmingham to provide advanced spine care to patients throughout Alabama and the Southeast as part of the Andrews Sports Medicine team.
He sees patients at our practice’s Birmingham, Trussville, and Cullman clinic locations, providing convenient access to specialized spine care across Central and North Alabama.
Life Outside of Medicine
Dr. Young and his wife, Lucy, along with their daughter, Kate, are excited to begin this next chapter back home in Birmingham. Outside of medicine, he enjoys golf, exercise, spending time outdoors, and making memories with his family.
