“I’ve always loved the training—the daily commitment to getting better. That’s what keeps me going.”

I grew up in Chelsea, Alabama, just outside Birmingham, and was always the “fat kid” who struggled with exercise. After high school, I attended the University of Alabama, where I was part of the Million Dollar Band. I earned both a bachelor’s in business management and an MBA from Alabama, and my career took me into banking, healthcare, and energy.

Eventually, I co-founded e-Systems, a software company specializing in natural gas management, where I serve as president and co-owner. I’m also in my third year as president of the Birmingham Track Club.

I didn’t start running until my early 40s, creating my own "couch to 5k" by alternating walking and running laps. Slowly, I progressed to 5k and 10k races, and in 2013, ran my first half marathon.

That pushed me to join Resolute Running, a local training center for runners, with the goal of completing my first full marathon in 2015.

My last run was January 1, 2024, but my comeback continues. I’m rebuilding fitness with spin classes and hope to run again soon.

Since then, running has been a huge part of my life. To date, I’ve completed 25 marathons—including Chicago, New York, and Berlin. During the pandemic, I explored ultra running races during the pandemic, running 50+ miles in 12 hours.

In early 2021, my running journey hit a setback. Knee pain during a half marathon soon turned into severe hip discomfort. By 2022, the pain affected my daily life. After an MRI, I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and told I’d need hip replacement surgery.

Thanks to the Birmingham Track Club, I was referred to Dr. Rachel Henderson at Andrews Sports Medicine, who introduced me to Dr. Jeffery Davis. Under their care, I had two robotic-assisted anterior hip replacements—my left hip in December 2023 and right hip in May 2024. Recovery was faster than I expected; I was walking unassisted within a week. I’m grateful for their exceptional care.

At heart, my story is about perseverance, consistency, and the power of excellent medical care. Whether leading the Birmingham Track Club, cheering runners on, or getting back out there myself, my love for running—and life—is stronger than ever.
