In 1974, John underwent the first successful ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction, performed by legendary orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Frank Jobe. John’s remarkable return to Major League Baseball helped transform an injury once considered career-ending into one that generations of athletes have successfully overcome.
