On June, 2025, Dr. Lyle Cain, orthopaedic surgeon at Andrews Sports Medicine and team physician for the University of Alabama, had the honor of testifying before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging in Washington, D.C.

The hearing, led by Chairman Senator Rick Scott, was titled “Lessons from the Field: How Sports Medicine Can Improve Health Outcomes for Seniors.”

Dr. Cain was one of three expert witnesses invited to speak, alongside Dr. Paul Legg of the University of Charleston and former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Together, the panel discussed how sports medicine principles—traditionally applied to elite athletes—can be successfully adapted to benefit the aging population.

During his remarks, Dr. Cain emphasized the importance of injury prevention, mobility preservation, and proactive physical health education starting early in life. He also highlighted how coordinated care models and community-based activity programs can help seniors maintain independence, reduce the risk of falls, and ultimately improve long-term health outcomes.

“It was an incredible opportunity to advocate for the value of sports medicine beyond athletics,” said Dr. Cain. “Helping people of all ages, especially seniors, live more active and pain-free lives is at the heart of what we do every day.”

We are proud of Dr. Cain for representing Andrews Sports Medicine on the national stage and continuing our commitment to advancing orthopaedic care for patients of all ages.
