Unfortunately, while playing defense late in the 4th quarter of the state championship game, I suffered a very severe injury. From my linebacker position, I was running to make a tackle and someone from the bottom side of the stack fell on my right leg. I was immediately in a lot of pain, and I was unable to get up. This was the final play of my high school career, and I truly felt like I had left it all on the field, finishing the game with 10 tackles.
Dr. Cain had such a calm demeanor. I knew he had treated various knee injuries on not only water ski athletes, but also NFL, NBA and MLB superstars.
When Dr. Cain advised that I had torn my ACL I was really upset because I was at the peak of my performance, and just could not be out for the season or longer. He told me to take a deep breath and look around. I saw all the jerseys of pro and college athletes and he said most of them have torn their ACL and they came back better than ever.
The Sunday after Thanksgiving, we had a basketball practice before our first home game of the season. I was going past a defender for a layup, when in midair, the defender hit the side of my knee. The next night, I played my first varsity home game. I ran through all the warmups and plays before the game. Slowly I began limping.
In the Fall of 2019, I was a softball pitcher in my junior year at Oklahoma State University. I began experiencing numbness and tingling in my left elbow. Also, I could not grip the softball. My arm had been swollen for a couple of weeks and so I decided to get it evaluated by my athletic trainer. He said that I had a stress fracture in my ulna and recommended I take time off from softball for 6 weeks. I had gone home to Minnesota for the Christmas break...
My entire experience, from my initial office visit, surgery and post-op appointments were first class. I never felt like I was pressured to have surgery. I knew I needed surgery after Dr. Andrew Cordover vividly explained my situation and treatment options during my initial visit.
I am feeling great and would recommend Dr. James Flanagan to anyone needing hip replacements and Drs. Charles Carnel and Andrew Cordover for back issues. I recommend Andrews Sports Medicine to all my family and friends dealing with orthopedic issues! Before I visited Andrews Sports Medicine, I was experiencing all kinds of pain, but once I took the step to go I was able to focus on getting better.
In the spring of 2020, the Covid19 Pandemic shut down collegiate sports including baseball at James Madison University (JMU). I continued to stay in shape by maintaining my training regimen. I joined a county league in order to keep pitching. I threw only one inning. In the second to last pitch, I felt a pop in my elbow.
At the beginning of the pandemic, Spring 2020, the marathon that I had signed up for Fall 2020 was cancelled. I decided to do what any rational runner would do, and train harder, faster, and longer than ever so that when races returned I would be ready to crush them all. It didn’t work out that way. By late July/early August, I was having quite a bit of hamstring tightness and hip pain during my training runs.
