BIOGRAPHYMichael K. Ryan, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon. He specializes in sports medicine surgery, hip preservation surgery (including hip arthroscopy for treatment of hip impingement and labral tears, treatment of hip dysplasia, and other joint preserving surgeries for adolescents and adults), as well as knee and hip replacements.
Dr. Ryan is a member of The Hip Center at Andrews Sports Medicine. In this capacity, he primarily focuses on treating patients with non-arthritic/preservation hip injuries, disorders and diseases.
Dr. Ryan brings extensive sports medicine experience having acted as a member of the medical teams for various institutions and organizations. Dr. Ryan currently serves as team physician for Samford University and Spain Park High School. He previously provided on-site medical coverage for the University of Alabama football team and University of Alabama athletics, SEC Baseball Tournament, Birmingham Barons, Birmingham Ballet, Cordova High School, Athletes Without Limits, New York Public School football, and New York University and Long Island University athletics.
Dr. Ryan’s research interests include sports medicine and hip preservation, and he has published numerous articles and orthopaedic book chapters on the topics. He has presented his research at annual orthopaedic conferences, and has been named the recipient of several awards during his career, including the American Sports Medicine Fellowship Society Basic Science Award, the John N. Delahay, MD Award in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from Georgetown University, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America Resident Scholarship. Dr. Ryan holds memberships in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the Notre Dame Orthopaedic Society.
Dr. Ryan graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor's degree in preprofessional studies, and was roommates with Dr. Marcus A. Rothermich also an orthopaedic surgeon at Andrews Sports Medicine. Dr. Ryan earned his medical degree from the University of Georgetown School of Medicine. He completed an orthopaedic residency training at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases, followed by a sports medicine fellowship with James R. Andrews, MD, E. Lyle Cain, MD, Jeffery R. Dugas, MD, and Benton A. Emblom MD at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham, Alabama. Additionally, Dr. Ryan completed a fellowship in hip preservation in Bern, Switzerland, working with some of the world’s pioneers in hip preservation and surgical treatment of hip pathology in adolescents and young adults.
Outside of work, Dr. Ryan serves as a member of the medical review board for Built Lean, a company that promotes balanced fitness and healthy nutritional habits for busy professionals. He also enjoys participating in athletic competitions around the world; over the past decade, Dr. Ryan has competed in more than ten Olympic distance triathlons, one full Ironman, two half Ironman, and seven marathons, where he twice qualified for the Boston Marathon. He also enjoys golf, skiing, fly fishing, and hiking. Dr. Ryan originally hails from Colorado Springs, Colorado, but is thrilled to be living in Birmingham, which he and his wife, Jenny, a California native, and their Rhodesian Ridgeback, Tagg, happily call home.

Ashlee Boles, PA-C
Ashlee was born and raised in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology at the University of Tennessee and was team captain of the Lady Vol varsity tennis team. She then received her Master of Health Sciences and Physician Assistant Studies degree at South College in Knoxville, Tennessee. After graduating from Physician Assistant school, she started working at Andrews Sports Medicine with Dr. Michael Ryan.
As a physician assistant, Ashlee works closely with Dr. Ryan in clinic to assist in evaluation and treatment of many orthopedic conditions involving the hip, knee, and shoulder. Ashlee’s skills are also utilized in surgery in assisting with hip arthroscopies, periacetabular osteotomies, anterior hip replacements, knee replacements, knee arthroscopies, shoulder arthroscopies, and other types of procedures. She also provides medical coverage for local high school football teams on Friday nights.
Ashlee gained a love for sports medicine since she has been an athlete herself from a very young age. She is very compassionate with her patients and enjoys building a bond over sports.
Ashlee enjoys an active lifestyle of running, cycling, playing pickleball, and snowboarding. She loves to hike and run with her Siberian Husky, Avanti. She relaxes by playing board games and watching college sports..
Kirby Kelley, MA, ATC, LAT, OTC
Clinical & Surgical Coordinator
Kirby was born and raised in Marietta, Ga. She received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training at Georgia College & State University and Masters of Arts at The University of Alabama. While in Tuscaloosa, she worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer with the University’s Cheer and Dance teams, as well as the Crimson Tide’s football program and Olympic teams. She has been active in the community by providing outreach athletic training at local high schools and events.
After graduating from The University of Alabama, she began working at Andrews Sports Medicine as Dr. Lyle Cain’s surgical coordinator. Upon adding Dr. Ryan to Andrews Sports Medicine, she began as his clinical and surgical coordinator and first assist. Kirby quarterbacks the Ryan team and takes great pride in and loves providing excellent patient care to facilitate patients’ return to painless full function for all desired endeavors.
Kirby is excellent at providing all necessary information during your visit, obtaining additional imaging, scheduling and planning for surgery, and providing exceptional customer service. She’ll work tirelessly to make sure your experience with Dr. Ryan and his team is efficient, seamless and enjoyable. Outside of work Kirby and her husband Grant have a curly-haired, adventurous toddler named Joanna who loves to chase their dog Lily.
Hannah Harrity, MAT, LAT, ATC
Hannah is a Certified Athletic Trainer and graduate of Samford University. She graduated with her Master’s Degree in Athletic Training.
Prior to that, she received her bachelor’s degree from Auburn University in exercise science. Before joining Andrews Sports Medicine, she worked as an Exercise specialist at St. Vincent One Nineteen. Hannah is also a STOTT trained Pilates instructor and enjoys using her education to help others achieve a healthy lifestyle.
She has found her love and passion for working in sports medicine after undergoing hip surgery while participating in gymnastics, volleyball, and diving.
Hannah was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama. She is the daughter of Richard and Melinda Holloway and has two brothers Rick and Mike Holloway. In her spare time, Hannah enjoys working out and spending time with her dog, Lucy, and husband, Duncan. She is honored to be part of the Ryan team.
